A gathering of Auckland business and local government leaders has been shown how readily available 3D geospatial technologies could create a spatial plan for Auckland that addresses the city’s growth challenges, engages communities and brings value to the national economy.

Auckland 3-D software firm Nextspace is out to cash in on growing interest from businesses in Apple’s iPad. Nextspace has developed an iPad application that lets users view and interact with 3-D models of buildings, infrastructure, assets such as vehicles and aircraft, and environments.

A 3D database of location-based council data could unite councils and citizens to more effectively deliver on the Super City vision. Nextspace is leading an initiative to build a ‘Visual City’ platform that could unite the data held by the eight councils merging into the Auckland Super City and make this data more accessible for communities and governance.
